The basics
What is Mookti?
One app for everything real learning needs. You plan your semester in groves, our project planning and management interface; keep your notes, readings, and lecture recordings in one library; power and measure progress with flashcards and quizzes; and, when you want it, talk through the hard parts with Ellen — an AI harness built to teach, not to do the work for you. It runs in your browser on your phone, tablet, or laptop, and everything stays in sync.
What does Mookti actually mean?
Mookti comes from the Sanskrit word मुक्ति, usually transliterated into English as "mukti". In Indian religions (like Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism, and Buddhism) and cultural contexts, it names what English-speakers in other parts of the world usually call "enlightenment". So naming our platform Mookti is definitely an aspirational choice, but it's one that we think is firmly aligned with our core mission: making world-class college education accessible and affordable to all students, everywhere.
Who is Ellen?
Ellen is your learning companion, named after "elenchus" — the Socratic method of learning through dialogue. She's a tutor, planner, and coach rolled into one: she can teach you a concept, quiz you on it, build you a learning path, fill in your calendar and task lists based on your syllabus, help manage your workload, and check in on how your semester is actually going. And she remembers you — your strengths and progress carry across every conversation.
What makes Ellen different from ChatGPT or Claude?
Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are great — in fact, we use several of those models behind the scenes, and you can choose between several to power your chats on Mookti. But LLMs are basically only (mind-bogglingly) complex text prediction engines. And the same way that a car's engine alone can't get you from Point A to Point B (you'll also need stuff like seats, doors, windows, seat belts, etc. — you know, the rest of the car) an LLM alone can't power real learning.
The problem is that LLMs are built to be direct and helpful, giving you answers to whatever you ask for. But real learning is hard, and happens in the way you're able to internalize new ways of seeing the world. So when a chatbot summarizes a reading for you, or outlines your midterm essay, it's cheating you out of the cognitive work you need to do to actually grow.
In short, Ellen is different from ChatGPT and Claude because of everything we've built around those labs' (again, very capable) models. Ellen isn't a model. She's a harness that directs the model to work the way great instructors do — and we built her into a complete study workspace, with planning, notes, flashcards on a real spaced-repetition schedule, and a calendar that knows your syllabus. No chatbot offers that.
What's a harness?
A harness is the layer between you and the AI model (LLM) that decides how it behaves and shapes its output. If an LLM is the engine, the harness is everything else around it that makes it a car and gets you to your learning goals. Our harness, Ellen, makes the model you select follow the same steps great professors at the world's best universities do: figure out what you already understand before explaining, give hints before answers so you keep doing the productive work, refuse to just agree with you when your reasoning is wrong (while conceding when you make a genuinely better argument), and adjust the difficulty as you go — harder when you're cruising, gentler when you're overwhelmed. The result is chat that builds skills that stick, instead of answers you'll forget by Thursday.
Getting started
Can I try Mookti without creating an account?
Yes — you can try it as a guest, no email or sign-up required. You get the real app with a metered amount of Ellen. If you decide to create an account, the work you did as a guest comes with you.
Do I need a credit card to get started?
No. Creating an account is free, using the free tier is free, and the 30-day Basic trial doesn't ask for a card either. We only ask for payment information when you actually subscribe.
How does the free trial work?
Every account can activate one free 30-day trial of our Basic plan — just click when you're ready, right from the app. No credit card required, which also means no surprise charge when it ends: the trial simply lapses back to the free tier, and everything you made stays put.
What do I get on the free tier?
Most of Mookti, forever, for free. Notes, notebooks, groves and planning, the calendar, and uploading your materials are all free and unmetered. Working with Ellen is metered: you get 30 credits every 30 days on our fast model — a chat response costs 2 — plus quizzes, flashcards, and one learning-path creation per month. Study plans and the premium models are part of paid plans.
What happens when my trial ends?
Your account moves to the free tier. Your learning history, materials, notes, and progress all stay exactly where you left them, and you can keep working with Ellen on the free tier's monthly allowance. When you're ready for more, subscribe to Basic, Plus, or Pro from Settings and pick up where you left off.
What devices does Mookti work on?
Any modern browser, on any device type: phone, tablet, laptop, whatever. You can download apps for iPad, iPhone, and Mac on the Apple App Store, or our Android app from Google Play. It's especially at home on an iPad: you can write and draw right on your notes with an Apple Pencil.
(While we haven't built dedicated apps for Windows, Chromebook, or Linux, you should be able to install Mookti via your browser to your home screen or dock on those devices to use it like a regular app. We don't currently have plans to build native apps for any of those platforms, but if you'd like us to change that, you can let us know at help@mookti.com.)
Is there a mobile app?
Yes! We have apps for iPadOS and iOS available on the Apple App Store and an Android app available on Google Play.
Learning with Ellen
Will using Mookti violate my school's honor code?
We don't think so — Mookti is designed to build your understanding, not to produce work you can copy. Ellen helps structure your process and coaches; you stay the author of everything you turn in. That said, every honor code is different, so check with your school or professor about what tools are allowed for any given assignment.
Will Ellen write my essay for me?
No — and not the outline either. That's on purpose: learning science is clear that organizing your own thinking and drafting your own words are exactly where the growth happens, so no step of that process gets done for you. What Ellen will do is coach you through every one of those steps — ask the questions that surface your ideas, push back where your argument is thin, and give you honest feedback on the outline and drafts you produce. If you want an AI to write your paper, there are other apps for that; they just won't make you smarter.
What subjects does Mookti cover?
Whatever you're studying. Ellen works across the college curriculum — STEM, humanities, social sciences, business — and gets sharper when you bring your own materials: your syllabus, readings, slides, and lecture recordings. She can also draw on our growing, built-in library of openly-licensed, peer-reviewed college textbooks and scholarly articles covering a range of disciplines, from statistics and biology to economics and political science, and cite the exact passage she's working from.
How do I know Ellen isn't making things up?
You can check her. When Ellen draws on a textbook or one of your documents, she cites it — and the citation is a link that opens the actual source at the actual passage. She's also built to ground claims in the material at hand and say "I don't know" rather than guess. AI models do still make mistakes, so if something looks off, tell us with the in-app feedback button — it genuinely helps, and a real human on our team always reviews what you have to say.
Does Ellen adapt to me?
Yes, and it goes deeper than remembering your name. Ellen keeps a running estimate of your ability in each skill area, updated every time you work together, and calibrates difficulty to keep you in productive struggle — where you're challenged, but the challenges are workable, and therefore lead to growth. She also tracks how you're doing more broadly, because a student running on four hours of sleep before a midterm needs different coaching than one who's ahead of schedule.
What can Ellen make for me?
Quizzes, flashcard decks on a spaced-repetition schedule, learning paths, study plans, study guides, worked examples, explanations, and practice problems — all built from what you're actually studying. She can also turn a syllabus into your semester calendar in one pass.
Planning with groves
What are groves and trees?
Trees are your projects — a course, a thesis, a job hunt — with tasks, due dates, and materials inside. Groves are how you organize trees around the bigger picture, with a vision you write down and outcomes you declare up front. As you complete work, each tree grows through twelve stages. When you finish a tree, you harvest it — with a short reflection on what you set out to do and what actually happened. It's task management, but it's also a way of thinking about who you're becoming.
Can Mookti set up my semester calendar?
Yes. Upload your syllabus and Ellen extracts the dates — classes, deadlines, exams — onto your calendar. You can connect Google Calendar so everything lives in one place, and when plans change, drag things around and Mookti will offer to reflow what depends on them.
What's the focus timer?
A built-in stopwatch and Pomodoro timer that follows you around the app. Focused minutes bank toward the tree you're working on — so your growth on screen reflects real time spent, not just boxes checked.
Notes & documents
What can I upload?
Just about anything a class throws at you: PDFs, Word docs, slides, plain text and Markdown, images, audio, and video — including lecture recordings, which we'll transcribe. Uploading and storage are always free, but transcriptions and creating things (like flashcards, quizzes, and study plans) uses Ellen credits.
What makes Mookti's notes different?
They do whatever the moment needs. Type a note, then draw on top of it with your Apple Pencil on iPad. Write real math with LaTeX. Drop in images, audio, or a PDF. Link notes to each other, to documents, and to your projects with [[wiki-links]]. Organize everything into notebooks, tag it, find it from one search bar, and export to Markdown or PDF whenever you want your words back.
Can I mark up my readings?
Yes — highlight, draw, and leave sticky notes right on your PDFs, with full Apple Pencil support on iPad. Your annotations save automatically and sync across devices.
Can I use Mookti offline?
Yes and no. The studying parts keep working without a connection, so with offline mode activated, you can review flashcards, take quizzes, write notes, manage tasks and your calendar, and read anything you've downloaded, even if you're away from wifi. It all syncs back when you reconnect. For Ellen, though, you need an active internet connection.
Pricing & billing
How do credits work?
Credits are how you get things done with Ellen. Each chat response costs credits based on the model doing the thinking: 2 on Gemini, 10 on Claude Sonnet, 18 on Claude Opus. Creating something — a quiz, a study plan, a learning path — uses credits at the same rate. Everything else in Mookti (notes, planning, calendar, uploads, storage) doesn't touch credits at all. Your allowance refreshes monthly, and if you run low you can top up anytime: a one-time credit pack adds 250 credits for $12. Top-up credits stay in your balance until you use them — they're spent first, and they stick around even if you change plans.
What's the difference between the plans?
Credits and model complexity.
Our free plan gives you 30 credits a month to run Ellen using Gemini 3.6 Flash — good for up to 15 responses from Ellen if you're only using chat, or a few less than that if you're also asking her to build flashcard decks, quizzes, or (once per month) a learning path.
Basic ($5/month) sticks with the same model, but upgrades you to 100 credits and unlocks the full set of things Ellen can build for you: in addition to flashcards, quizzes, and unlimited study plans (subject to your credit balance, of course) that adds learning paths and study guides.
Plus ($20/month) and Pro ($50/month) give you even more credits, plus access to more powerful (and more expensive) models. Plus gets you 440 credits and Claude Sonnet 5, while Pro gets you 1,150 credits and Claude Opus 5.
If you run out of credits on any plan, you're able to upgrade to a higher subscription tier or top up your credit balance with a one-time purchase of 250 credits for $12.
What's a Semester Pass?
One payment, one term, no subscription. Pick a plan — Basic, Plus, or Pro — then pick your exact start and end dates: anything longer than a month and shorter than a year, starting today or up to nine months out. You pay once, at 10% off the monthly price for that window, and get your plan's full monthly credits for every month of the pass. When your term ends, it just ends — nothing renews, nothing charges, and everything you made stays yours on the free tier. Built for how school actually works.
Can I switch or cancel my plan?
Anytime, right from Settings. Upgrades take effect immediately with credit for unused time; downgrades take effect at your next billing cycle. Cancel whenever you like — your account and data stay intact, and any top-up credits you purchased stick around. (Semester Passes never renew, so there's nothing to cancel.)
What payment methods do you accept?
All major credit and debit cards, processed by Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe directly — we never see or store them.
Can I get a refund?
Under usual circumstances, no — that's why the free tier and the 30-day trial exist, so you can be sure Mookti is worth it before paying. If you do subscribe and something extraordinary happens, like a dramatic loss of income or medical and family emergencies that require you to take time off from school, email help@mookti.com and we'll do our best to help, but we can't make any guarantees.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
Nothing bad. Your account, notes, materials, and learning history remain intact, so you can pick up where you left off if you return. If you want everything gone instead, you can permanently delete your account yourself from Settings, anytime.
Organization & mission
What is a public benefit corporation?
A public benefit corporation (PBC) is a legal structure that requires companies to balance profit with purpose. Because we're a PBC, we're legally obligated to prioritize your educational success, not just shareholder returns. That means we make decisions based on what's best for learners, not what's most profitable.
What's the actual legal language of the commitment Mookti makes to benefit the public?
Per Mookti's Public Benefit Corporation Conversion filed October 2025, the "specific public benefit purpose of the Corporation is to democratize access to world-class higher education by (i) reducing financial and geographic barriers to access and (ii) advancing new models of postsecondary education to better serve learner needs in the 21st century and beyond."
How is Mookti funded?
We're bootstrapped — meaning we rely entirely on what our founders can contribute and what we earn through your subscriptions. So given what professors' salaries look like these days, that basically means we rely entirely on your support.
Who created Mookti?
Emmy Kumar, Ph.D. Before founding Mookti, they taught at Princeton University (where they earned their Ph.D.), in a college program for inmates at New Jersey state correctional facilities, and in the California State University system. Do you sell my data?
Never. Your privacy is fundamental to our mission. Your data is used only to improve your learning experience. We don't sell it or share it with advertisers.
Privacy & security
Is my data secure?
Yes. We take data security seriously. All traffic to and from Mookti is encrypted (HTTPS everywhere), and our hosting providers encrypt data at rest. Payments are handled entirely by Stripe, a PCI-compliant processor — your card number never touches our servers. And you're in control of long-term storage: you can delete your account and its data yourself, from Settings, at any time.
Can my school or my parents see my activity?
Your account is private to you. We don't share your activity, progress, or anything else with schools, parents, or anyone unless the law requires it. (For students under 18, U.S. and State laws give parents and guardians certain rights to their child's information — reach us at privacy@mookti.com with questions.)
What privacy controls do I have?
In Settings you can turn off product analytics and session recording, disconnect Google Calendar, and permanently delete your account — which cancels any subscription, removes your files, and erases your data from our systems. You can also request a full export of your data by emailing help@mookti.com.

Can teachers or schools use Mookti?
Not yet, but it's part of our long-term plan. We want Mookti to be the new standard digital learning platform around the globe, and we're working hard to make that happen. Is Mookti available internationally?
Yes — Mookti works anywhere you have an internet connection. For now the app is in English and pricing is in U.S. dollars, but Ellen supports learning in a range of languages through the built-in multilingual capabilities of the models she runs.
